Signatory Vintage Samurai Collection Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 Single Refill Sherry Butt Islay Single Malt Whisky (2020) 70cl

1 of the 4 from the Samurai Collection from Signatory Vintage.

Released Exclusively in Germany

For more than 700 years, these heroic warriors shaped the image of Japan. Kirsch Import and Signatory Vintage are now transforming them into protectors of good taste: the samurai. A new series of fine bottlings from Andrew Symington's treasure trove of wood has been elevated to the noble warrior status with expressive labels . Each is personalized with illustrated heroic figures , contrasting in black and white with the rays of the "rising sun," as the Japanese military flag is called.

Just as the sword is the soul of the samurai, sherry casks form the heart of the new range . From the heavily smoky Bunnahabhain Staoisha , to the intense mahogany-toned Ben Nevis , and the 12-year-old single malt from Royal Brackla , a distillery that primarily produces blends, to the wonderfully dark Glenlivet from 2006: all of the single malts in the series, bottled exclusively for Kirsch Import, were matured or finished in sherry butts . In keeping with the fighting spirit of their namesakes, the Samurai single malts unfold their dark aromas at cask strengths of up to 62.1% ABV. A matter of honor: these limited-edition Scotch whiskies are neither chill-filtered nor colored (we're so thrilled about this that we've put it on the label twice).

Tasting Notes

Nose : dominant cold smoke, clear alcohol, subtle sherry note

Palate : very intense, strong smokey start, still burns on the lips, after the long smoky taste there is also a very subtle fruity sweetness, the alcohol is clearly present but not optimally integrated

Finish : longer very smoky departure

About Bunnahabhain

The Bunnahabhain distillery is located in the northeast of the island of Islay on the water that separates the islands of Islay and Jura. The distillery is the most northerly located on the island and has a beautiful view of the "Paps of Jura". Bunnahabhain comes from the Gaelic and means "Mouth of the river". The distillery was built at the mouth of the Margadele River. The first new spirit left the distillery in the year 1882. Little has changed or modernized the distillery to this day. Only the malting floors have been removed and in 1963 two stills were added. In the stillhouse there are two wash stills and two spirit stills. They are relatively small stills and they are heated with steam. The six washbacks are made of Oregon pine. No specific wood is used for maturing the malts at Bunnahabhain, to prevent it from influencing the character of the malt too much. A mix of bourbon, sherry and refill casks is used. Like all other distilleries on Islay, Bunnahabhain also obtains its malt from the Port Ellen malthouse. The big difference with the other distilleries on Islay is that Bunnahabhain does not dry the malt with peat but with warm air. As a result, this Islay malt has no smoke or peat flavour. The water to make the malt comes from a water source on Margadale Hill. The water from this source is pumped up from a great depth and led to the distillery via a pipeline. This is to prevent the water from coming into contact with peat.

About Signatory Vintage

Perthshire-based independent bottler and owner of Edradour distillery. Signatory is an independent bottler with a vigorous release policy, and usually some 50 different single malt expressions are available at any one time. Whiskies are bottled across a number of ranges, including the Un-chill Filtered Collection, the Cask Strength Collection and the Single Grain Collection.

Signatory bottling, bonding and office facilities are located in a building adjacent to Edradour distillery, near Pitlochry in Perthshire, which the company also owns. Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky was established in 1988 by Andrew Symington, who had previously managed the prestigious Prestonfield House Hotel in Edinburgh. The first cask bottled by Symington was a 1968 Sherry-cask-matured Glenlivet.

Signatory was initially based in the Newhaven area of Edinburgh, where a bottling plant was developed, but in 2002 the firm acquired Edradour distillery from Pernod Ricard, and subsequently moved all of its operations north to the picturesque Perthshire location.

A new bottling plant and a warehousing complex were constructed, strictly in keeping with the vernacular architectural style which prevails at the much-visited and diminutive former farm distillery.
