Bunnahabhain 50 Year Old 1968 Signatory Vintage 30th Anniversary Single Sherry Cask #12397 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2019) 70cl

1 of 323 bottles made

To celebrate their 30th anniversary, indie bottlers Signatory have released this incredible Bunnahabhain. Following distillation in 1968, it spent five decades in a refill sherry butt, and is limited to a run of 323 bottles. In the case you’ll get two branded glasses, too.

Distilled in 1968 when direct heat methods still reigned supreme so all of that rancio (rotten wood but sounding fancier but tasting amazing ... strange maybe but trust us. it is awesome) was more pronounced in whisky but when environmental concerns came to the forefront it changed to steam which changed the flavour profile of whisky forever.

This is a very rich, well priced, great value for money whisky that should be enjoyed and savoured in smaller sips than normal. We are not telling you how to drink it, just merely that less quantity of this is needed to achieve whisky nirvana. A state of old whisky bliss in the flavour that one cannot reach in a 3 year old or 10 year old (up til now). Maturation at its finest.

Signatory Vintage Scotch is one of the most discerning independent bottlers of Scotch in the world. They bottle one cask at a time, capitalizing on the unique colour and flavour characteristics of each individual cask.

By sourcing all-natural malts from the best distilleries in Scotland, selecting the best single batches and bottling only the finest casks within those batches. The resulting “single, single, single malt” this is about as exclusive it gets.

About Bunnahabhain

The Bunnahabhain distillery is located in the northeast of the island of Islay on the water that separates the islands of Islay and Jura. The distillery is the most northerly located on the island and has a beautiful view of the "Paps of Jura". Bunnahabhain comes from the Gaelic and means "Mouth of the river". The distillery was built at the mouth of the Margadele River. The first new spirit left the distillery in the year 1882. Little has changed or modernized the distillery to this day. Only the malting floors have been removed and in 1963 two stills were added. In the stillhouse there are two wash stills and two spirit stills. They are relatively small stills and they are heated with steam. The six washbacks are made of Oregon pine. No specific wood is used for maturing the malts at Bunnahabhain, to prevent it from influencing the character of the malt too much. A mix of bourbon, sherry and refill casks is used. Like all other distilleries on Islay, Bunnahabhain also obtains its malt from the Port Ellen malthouse. The big difference with the other distilleries on Islay is that Bunnahabhain does not dry the malt with peat but with warm air. As a result, this Islay malt has no smoke or peat flavour. The water to make the malt comes from a water source on Margadale Hill. The water from this source is pumped up from a great depth and led to the distillery via a pipeline. This is to prevent the water from coming into contact with peat.
