It’s aged for ten years, and distilled following the traditions laid down over the last 200 years by a succession of passionate and skilled master distillers. This is a truly classic single malt Scotch whisky, made from malted barley which is first cold-smoked and then dried over a peat fire. The smoke from the unique Islay peat gives Laphroaig its particular rich flavour. This peated whisky is renowned for its bold, smoky taste, followed by a hint of seaweed and a surprising sweetness. Full-bodied with a long finish, it truly embodies the quintessential Laphroaig character.

Laphroaig 10 Year Old is really smoky and iodine rich. This has to be one of Scotland's most characterful drams. Laphroaig is known for their medicinal malts, and the classic 10-year-old is no exception.

Laphroaig 10 is matured in ex-bourbon barrels for at least ten years and has a distinct peaty flavour.

Laphroaig 10 Year Old was first released in 2004 and has since become a popular expression of the Laphroaig whisky brand. It has won numerous awards, including a Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge in 2010.

Tasting Notes

Nose This opens on big, smoky muscular peat notes. There are spices, and liquorice, as well as a big dose of salt. This whisky has become slightly sweeter in recent years, and it appears beautifully on the nose, amidst the classic iodine/sticking plasters and cool wood smoke we love.

Palate Seaweed-led, with a hint of vanilla ice cream and more than a whiff of notes from the first aid box (TCP, plasters etc). The oak is big, and muscles its way into the fore as you hold this whisky over your tongue. An upsurge of spices develop – cardamom/black pepper/chilli.

Finish Big and drying, as the savoury, tarry notes build up with an iodine complexity.

Overall The only malt from Laphroaig’s range that John Campbell recommends with water; try it, it opens up the palate massively, providing a dazzling array of additional flavours…

About Laphroaig

Another of the Kildalton triumvirate, Laphroaig is a substantial distillery with seven stills and a capacity of over 3m litres per annum (that’s 1m more than Lagavulin and 2m more than Ardbeg).

Unusually for a distillery of this size Laphroaig has retained its own floor maltings which still account for 20% of its requirements. They have been retained specifically because it is believed that the Laphroaig kiln produces a more creosote-like phenolic character than the malt the distillery receives from the Port Ellen maltings. Certainly, a tarry iodine note is one of the signatures of the spirit.

The odd number of stills includes a spirit still which is double the size of its neighbours. As this produces a different character new make it is always blended in with those from the smaller ones.

A very long fore shot run means there are less estery notes in the new make, while a deeper cut means that heavier phenolics are captured compared to Ardbeg and Lagavulin. Its distinct sweet note therefore comes from the preferred cask type used – ex-Bourbon barrels. These, the distillery says, became the norm at Laphroaig post-Prohibition when Ian Hunter began travelling to the US. The effect of this type of oak is showcased in the Quarter Cask release where a vatting of younger Laphroaigs is finished in small casks. Some Sherry casks are in the inventory and are mostly used for longer-term maturation.

40% ABV

3cl / 30ml

This product is not to be purchased by anyone under the age of 18 or drinking age in their country.
We reserve the right to ask for your identification should it be necessary to do so.

https://b1yyjg-bk.myshopify.com/products/laphroaig-10-year-old-islay-single-malt-whisky-2023-3cl-sample
